GONE FISHING

I recall seeing such signs in shop windows, as we travelled through small towns on our way to the cottage, when I was a kid.

Over time, the words became a euphemism for, "we aren't here right now, but we'll be back." Whether there was any fishing involved was irrelevant.

It was about the pause.

This fisherman happens to be my brother, Rick, and photo credit goes to my sister-in-law, Joanne.

What I love about this image is the tranquility. A man, a fishing rod, the water, the sky, the implied sound of the surf. There is also the implied patience of the process of casting and reeling in (and releasing the fish if you happen to catch any).

Rather idyllic, right?

Now, not everyone can live near the water. Not everyone can afford the equipment, or take the time to tie flies (a true art form), but we can pause.

Even if its just for a moment.

And what I'm learning is how important it is to our physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being to do so.

I am also realizing that, for some, the pause is intentional. For others, it can happen with no pre-planning.

I've been away from this site since June. It wasn't intentional. The days got away from me. It was summer and, well, I guess I'd gone fishing in a euphemistic way.

What I now understand is how important it was for me to allow the days (and life) to unfold in an organic way.

Next time I will remember to post a sign.

Onward.
